Step 1
CHILDREN'S ORCHESTRA AT THE CONSERVATOIRE
The Nairobi Children’s Orchestra meets every Saturday from 10-11:30am at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music. New members aged 4-12, at any stage in their musical journey, are welcome to join.
About Us
The primary goal of the Nairobi Children’s Orchestra is to experience the benefits of collective participation by practicing empathy, true friendship, teamwork, discipline, hard work and fun through learning to play music in ensemble.
How do the classes work?
The orchestra meets on a weekly basis and works with a team of tutors, spending some time working as a full orchestra and some in smaller sectional groups, differentiated to their age, instrument and level. All children have a chance to develop a good technical foundation, reliable literacy and efficient aural skills, with deeper understanding of musical and cultural expressions.
Children are exposed to a rich variety of music; a typical term’s programme including at least one Kenyan or African piece, music from the standard classical repertoire, as well as traditional and popular music from other parts of the world, films and musicals.
Each term ends with a concert to which family and friends are invited, giving the children an opportunity to develop their performance skills and confidence, and showcase what they have learned in the term.
Do I need to play an instrument to join?
All children from age 4-12 are welcome to join regardless of their level. Children who have never played before will start their journey on elementary instruments (percussion, recorder, etc.) which the orchestra provides; learning the basics of reading, listening and ensemble, before progressing to other orchestral instruments.
Children who are already taking instrumental lessons are encouraged to bring their own instrument and will be given music suitable to their playing level.
