About The Competition

The Spanish Classical Guitar Competition is a national-level classical guitar competition by the Kenya Conservatoire of Music and Embassy of Spain in Kenya developed with the intention of fostering an interest in Spanish music and culture in Africa.


COMPETITION RULES

Competition Categories

Senior Category: 18-30 years of age •Participation in this category is open to all competitors between the ages of 18 and 30 years of age as of March 1st, 2022 as determined on the basis of passport OR ID documents submitted.

Junior Category: below 18 years of age •Participation in this category is open to all competitors below the age of 18, as of March 1st, 2022 as determined on the basis of passport or ID documents submitted.


ELIGIBILITY

•The competition is open to Kenyans, Uganda, Somalia and residents in these countries.

•Candidates must satisfy the age limits. The winner from competitions will have to produce identity proof showing date of birth and nationality.

•Candidates must use a classical guitar with nylon strings for the competition.

•This competition is meant for Kenyan, Ugandan and Somalian classical guitar students. The prize is meant to help them gain more exposure as guitar students and for them to develop as musicians. In this spirit, professional classical guitarists are not eligible to compete.


VIDEO GUIDELINES

•Videos must be uploaded on YouTube as “Unlisted” or “Public” and the video comments should be deactivated.

•The video link with name of participant repertoire must be emailed to info@conservatoire.co.ke before the deadline.

•The video description should contain the programme: pieces + composer´s name.

•The participant should ensure adequate sound and lighting.

•The recording should be in “one take” and audio post-edits are not allowed. There cannot be any cuts between pieces.

•The face and hands of competitors should be visible at all times.

•The deadline for uploading the video will be 12th March.


Duration of repertoire

•Senior Category: up to 15 minutes

•Junior Category: up to 8 minutes

Note: This is the maximum acceptable length of the video. Competitors can submit videos shorter in duration.

•Competitors can create their own programme from the recognised classical guitar repertoire.

•There will be a special prize for the best performance of a Spanish Composer.

•Due to Covid the competition will be celebrated online.


THE JURY

•There will be 3 members of the Jury: a member of the Kenya Conservatoire, a member of the Spanish Embassy and a professional guitarist.

•The Jury will consider musical interpretation, technical perfection, tone, expression, creativity, stage presence, difficulty level and originality of each candidate’s performance.

•Results will be based on the performance of the participants at the competition and will have nothing to do with the previous achievements in music education or competition.

•The Jury can award accesits and special prices, at their convenience.

•The Jury’s decision is binding.

•The Jury’s decision will be public on the 14th of March.


PRIZES & WINNERS

•Winners are required to provide photos that can be used on the organiser´s social media.

Prizes 1st PRIZE SENIOR CATEGORY •3 sessions x 60 min. master class online with Rafael Serrallet. •One trimester half hour package sessions in the conservatoire •String sets - scores - books - CD’s

2nd & 3rd PRIZE SENIOR CATEGORY •1 session x 30 min. master class online with Rafael Serrallet. •Three half hour sessions in the conservatoire

1st PRIZE JUNIOR CATEGORY •2 sessions x 30 min. master class on line with Rafael Serrallet. •One trimester half hour package sessions in the conservatoire

2nd & 3rd PRIZE JUNIOR CATEGORY •Three half hour sessions at the conservatoire.
